The girls from Sunday’s Well Girls’ National School received a very special musical delivery from Corks Red FM “Red Patrollers” on Friday 03rd March. The Red Patrollers were delivering 20 Ukuleles, 10 of which were sponsored by Gurranabraher Credit Unions Freedom Student Account. The remainder came from the fundraising of the school’s Parents’ Association.
The instruments will be used by the school in conjunction with Music Generation Cork City. Music Generation is Ireland’s National Music Education Programme that transforms the lives of children and young people through access to high quality performance music education in their locality. Initiated by Music Network, Music Generation is co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds, the Department of Education and Skills and local Music Education Partnerships.
Michael O’ Connell, Chairman of Gurranabraher Credit Union, explained the reasoning behind this sponsorship:
“We know how hard the Parents’ Association have been working to raise the funds to purchase the Ukuleles and we were delighted to help by providing the funding for 10 Ukuleles. We felt it was incumbent on the Credit Union to support such a worthwhile initiative to develop our children’s musical skills. It also makes sense that our Freedom Student account is associated with this sponsorship as we look to change the way student’s bank and give young people a real alternative when opening a savings account”
Liz Horgan, Principal of Sunday’s Well Girls’ National School, said:
“This fantastic new resource was made possible through the unstinting efforts of our Parents’ Association, and with the ongoing support of Gurranabraher Credit Union. We have developed a strong relationship with Gurranabraher Credit Union over many years, through both their Student Savings Accounts and sponsorship. These instruments further enhance our extensive music program ensuring exciting music learning is accessible to all our pupils.
The girls will perform, using the new ukuleles, as part of the school’s end-of-year Music Generation concert on June 13th – another opportunity to show case the talent of the girls from Sunday’s Well.
